Cold weather dries out hair more quickly and makes hair brittle and susceptible to breakage. Heaters in homes and cars can also dry out hair.
Here are some tips to keeping healthy, beautiful, static-free hair in the winter:
 |
Use the appropriate shampoo and conditioner
Using a nourishing shampoo and an enriched conditioner will help lock in moisture and reduce static. Try TIGI's Brunette Goddess, Oatmeal & Honey, Foxy Curls, Fashionista, Self-Absorbed, Super Star or Moisture Maniac (last four listed with static guard), ALL now available in the money-saving TWEEN size! For a deep conditioning and hair repair treatment, try LOREAL Intense Repair Conditioner or the NEW LOREAL Professionnel Force Vector, formulated to reinforce weakened, brittle and fragile hair. |
Use conditioning products before using heated styling tools.
Apply a repair cream, heat-protecting cream or leave-in conditioner first. Use it sparingly, especially on the ends, but don't forget it. You don't want to make your hair heavy or gunky, but more importantly, you don't want heat applied directly to the ends of your unprotected hair. Try Catwalk's TIGI Bed Head's After Party (apply wet or dry) or S Factor's Papaya Leave-In Moisture Spray. |

Reduce your use of styling appliances
Winter cold robs hair of its vital moisture, leaving it dry, brittle and more susceptible to frizz and static. Blow dryers and curling irons can harm dehydrated hair, leading to further damage. Keep your use of these styling appliances to a minimum and be sure to use leave-in conditioners to shield your hair, such as: Catwalk's Fast Fixx or Bed Head's Super Star. |
Use 'Restylers' to reduce static and fly-aways
To help with static and fly-aways, which are bound to pop up, keep a restyler in your purse to spray or smooth on in a hair emergency! Try Catwalk's Camera Ready Shiner & Defrizz, Bed Head's After Party or LOREAL's Perfect Shimmer Shine Spray.

Get a Deep Conditioning Treatment in the Salon
A professional Deep Conditioning Treatment in the salon will last much longer than a leave-in conditioner or wash out conditioner you can do yourself. Applied by your stylist and set deep into the hair follicle, the moisture gets locked in and can solve your static and dry hair problem for weeks on end.
End your shower with cool water
It's tempting to take a long hot shower, but the extra heat can dry out your hair, making it more prone to damage. Rinsing your hair with cool water after shampooing and conditioning helps keep moisture in, giving your hair extra shine.
Don't go out with wet hair!
To avoid damaging your hair, you've opted not to blow dry… but now you should stay indoors until your hair is completely dry. Believe it or not, damp hair can freeze and break when exposed to cold winter weather.
Get your hair trimmed.
It sounds like a no-brainer, but it's not always easy to fit more frequent haircuts into a busy schedule. Dryness starts from the ends. If you normally get your hair cut every 10 weeks, get it cut in eight weeks. If you usually trim your hair every six weeks, get it trimmed monthly.
For more information and specific advice about your hair care, please consult with your stylist who is knowledgeable and familiar with your hair.
Enjoy the winter! Brrrrr…
